We believe a fair interview process gives people multiple ways of demonstrating their potential. Including a task within your process will enable people who might be less confident with explaining their experiences and skills through talking an opportunity to show you what their skills are.
The task you choose should be valuable to the individual too. Pick something that is core to the role itself and gives them an opportunity to explore your company or projects. That way they will gain a good sense of whether the role is a good fit for them too.
Your task should be set for no more than 3 hours and we recommend trusting people to complete it in their own time rather than in timed conditions. A detailed task brief explaining why you are asking them to do the task and how it relates to the role will also reassure people of its purpose.
If you are able to we also recommend paying people for their time on tasks. This isn't always possible but it's an inclusive gesture to make as not everyone can afford to take 2-3 hours out of their day to work on a task. Plus with the right task it's likely you'll gain valuable ideas and perspectives for your organisation even if candidates are unsuccessful in the process.
Here's one of our example task briefs. We choose to host briefs on Notion or Google Docs and update it with questions from other candidate so everyone can see the latest information.
